Parenting coordination is a non-confidential, child-focused process which assists parents in implementing parenting arrangements once those arrangements have been agreed in a parenting plan or provided for in a court order either on a final or interim basis.
It is about assisting parents in their final transition from a prior intimate relationship with the other parent to a co-parenting relationship only.
The parenting coordinator
- Facilitates the resolution of disputes between the parents
- Educates the parents about children’s needs
- Attempts to improve communication between parents
- Case manages and provides direction for the family
- Can monitor compliance with parenting orders
- Makes appropriate referrals to mental health, counselling, therapy when necessary
The goals for a family after successful parenting coordination are
- Parents being able to negotiate the day to day issues arising in parenting orders with minimal conflict and not exposing the children to that conflict.
- Children managing their life between two households and experiencing their parents communicating effectively and being able to make decisions together.
- Not having to re-enter the litigation system.
